Asking with Open Hands

Scripture: John 16:24

“Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.”
John 16:24 KJV

Jesus spoke these words on the night before the cross. His disciples were confused and grieving, sensing that something was about to change. Rather than leaving them with a lecture, He left them with an invitation: from now on, they could come to the Father in His name.

Asking in Jesus’ name is more than adding a phrase to the end of a prayer. It means coming on the strength of who He is and what He has done, not on the strength of our own record. We don’t have to earn a hearing. Through Christ, the door is already open.

Many of us hesitate to ask. We worry that our requests are selfish, or we’ve been disappointed before and would rather not risk it again. Jesus doesn’t scold His friends for asking too much; He gently notes that they had asked for nothing at all. He wants us to bring our needs, and He ties our asking to something He cares about deeply: our joy.

Today, let’s name one thing we have quietly stopped praying about. We can bring it to God again, plainly and honestly, trusting Him with both the answer and the timing. A full heart often begins with open hands.

Prayer

Father, thank You that I can come to You through Jesus. Forgive me for the times I’ve held back my requests out of fear or discouragement. Teach me to ask freely, to trust Your answers, and to find my joy made full in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
