Looking Out for One Another
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:24
“Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth.”
1 Corinthians 10:24 KJV
The church in Corinth was full of gifted people who struggled to get along. They argued about food, freedom, and who was right. Paul cut through it all with a simple principle: don’t just look out for yourself, look out for the good of others.
“Wealth” here doesn’t mean money. In older English, the word meant well-being or welfare. Paul is asking us to care about what’s good for the people around us, even when it costs us some convenience or a little of our freedom.
This runs against the grain of much of what we hear. We’re encouraged to protect our time, guard our rights, and put ourselves first. Healthy boundaries have their place, but Paul reminds us that love naturally turns outward. Jesus didn’t seek His own comfort; He gave Himself for us.
With the Lord’s Day just ahead, let’s look back over these seven days and remember the people God placed in our path. Then we can ask how we might seek their good in the week to come: a meal for a tired friend, a call to someone lonely, a willingness to let someone else go first.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the love You’ve shown me in Christ, who gave Himself for my good. Turn my heart outward. Help me notice the needs of those around me and gladly seek their welfare above my own comfort. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
