Running Light
Scripture: Hebrews 12:1b
“Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.”
Hebrews 12:1b KJV
Hebrews 11 is a long list of people who trusted God: Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Rahab, and many more. Chapter 12 opens by picturing them as a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us. Their stories remind us that the life of faith can be lived. Then the writer turns to us and tells us how to run.
First, we lay aside every weight. Not everything that slows us down is sinful. Some weights are simply things we’ve picked up along the way: an overfull schedule, a habit of comparison, a grudge we keep meaning to release. No runner carries a backpack in a race, and some of what we’re holding needs to be set down.
The writer also names the sin that “so easily” entangles us. Most of us know which one that is for us. Instead of pretending it isn’t there, we can bring it into the light, confess it, and ask for God’s help to get free. His grace is greater than our most stubborn struggle.
Finally, we run with patience. This is not a sprint but a long, steady race, and it’s the one set before us, not someone else’s. The very next verse tells us where to fix our eyes: on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Today, let’s name one weight we can lay down and take the next faithful step.
Prayer
Father, show me the weights I’ve been carrying that You never asked me to hold. Free me from the sin that so easily trips me up. Give me patience for the race You’ve set before me, and keep my eyes fixed on Your Son. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
