When Deep Calls to Deep
Scripture: Psalm 42:7
“Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.”
Psalm 42:7 KJV
The writer of Psalm 42 was far from home and far from the worship he loved. He remembered leading crowds to the house of God, and now he felt cut off, mocked, and close to drowning in sorrow. His words sound like someone standing beneath a waterfall, wave after wave crashing down.
Some seasons feel exactly like that. One hard thing follows another before we’ve caught our breath — a loss, then a diagnosis, then a strained relationship. We may wonder whether God has noticed. Yet look closely at how the psalmist describes the waves: they are “thy waves” and “thy billows.” Even in the flood, he knows whose ocean he is in.
“Deep calleth unto deep” can also describe what happens between our hearts and God. The depth of our need cries out, and the depth of His love answers. No sorrow sinks too low for His mercy to reach. Just one verse later, the psalmist speaks of the Lord’s lovingkindness by day and His song in the night.
If we feel overwhelmed today, we don’t have to tidy up our feelings before we pray. We can tell God honestly what is crashing over us, just as this psalm does. Then, like the psalmist, we can speak to our own souls: “Hope thou in God.” The waves are real, but they are not the final word.
Prayer
Lord, You know the waves that are rolling over me right now. When I feel I’m going under, remind me that I am held in Your hands. Let Your love answer the depths of my need, and give me Your song in the night. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
