Making Room for Rain

“And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Make this valley full of ditches. For thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.”
2 Kings 3:16–17

Encouragement

Three kings and their armies had marched seven days through the wilderness of Edom, and the water ran out. Soldiers and animals alike were close to collapse. When they sought out Elisha, God’s answer sounded strange: dig trenches all over this dry valley. There would be no wind and no rain, yet the valley would fill with water. It took real faith to pick up a shovel under a cloudless sky. The next morning, water came flowing in and filled every trench. Sometimes God asks us to make room for what we can’t yet see. We can do the ordinary, faithful work in front of us and trust Him to send what only He can provide.

Something to Ponder

What might God be asking us to prepare this week as we wait for Him to provide?

Prayer

Lord, I don’t always see how You’ll meet my need. Give me faith to do the work You’ve put in front of me, even when the sky looks empty. Fill my dry places in Your own way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
