Learning to Be Still

Scripture: Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”
Psalm 46:10 KJV

Stillness can feel uncomfortable. When life is noisy, quiet has a way of bringing every worry to the surface, and it often seems easier to stay busy than to sit with what we feel. Yet God gently asks us to stop and remember who He is.

Psalm 46 was written for troubled times. It speaks of mountains shaking and waters roaring. In the middle of that upheaval, God does not tell His people to fix everything. He tells them to be still. Stillness is not giving up; it is letting go of the belief that everything depends on us.

When we pause, something shifts. Our circumstances may look the same, but our hearts begin to settle. We remember that God was faithful yesterday, that He is with us today, and that tomorrow is already in His care.

Perhaps we can set aside five quiet minutes today: no phone, no list, nothing to accomplish. We can breathe, read this verse slowly, and let it remind us that God is God, and we don’t have to be.

Prayer

Father, my mind is often racing and my heart is often restless. Quiet me in Your presence. Help me release my need to control what only You can hold, and remind me again that You are God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
